Reading
Students will be participating in Daily 5 during our Reading block. We will start off the year by building stamina in 5 different reading activities: read to self, read to someone, listen to reading, work on writing, and word work. During Daily 5, all students have the opportunity to choose their own books to read. That way all students are reading books that are on their independent level and of interest to them. Our class library has a large selection of many authors and genres. Everyone is sure to find something they like!
We will start off the year practicing routines for each Daily 5 Rotation and building our stamina in each activity.
We will then move on to learn about the differences between fiction and nonfiction texts and will use QAR (question-answer-response) to ask questions before, during, and after reading a text to check for understanding as we read. Good readers ask lots of questions when reading!
After that, students will focus on fiction texts. We will review story elements: characters, setting, problem, main events, and solution. We will spend lots of time focusing on the characters and coming up with traits to describe them using text evidence. We will also summarize what we read and will determine the theme, or central message of stories.
